iTunes used to arrange your iPhone apps. What now?

Updated

If you remember dragging apps between Home Screen pages in iTunes, you're not imagining it. That feature is gone, and Apple never replaced it on Windows. Here's what changed and what you can do instead.

What happened to the Apps screen in iTunes?

In September 2017 Apple released iTunes 12.7 and removed the App Store and app management from iTunes on both Mac and Windows. That included the Apps screen where you could see your Home Screen pages side by side and drag apps between them.

Since then, apps are managed on the iPhone itself, and Apple hasn't offered a way to arrange the Home Screen from a Windows PC.

Can I install an old version of iTunes?

Older iTunes versions that still have the Apps screen can be found, but they were built for the iPhones and iOS versions of 2017. They aren't a dependable way to manage a current iPhone, and we don't recommend it.

What about Apple's Apple Devices app?

On Windows 10 and 11, Apple's free Apple Devices app (from the Microsoft Store) now handles much of what iTunes did for iPhones: backing up, updating, restoring and syncing. It doesn't let you arrange your Home Screen.

It's still useful to have: WiggleGrid needs Apple Devices (or iTunes) installed so Windows can talk to your iPhone over USB.

Arranging apps on the iPhone

  1. Touch and hold an empty part of the Home Screen until the apps start to jiggle. You can also touch and hold any app and choose Edit Home Screen.
  2. Drag an app to a new spot on the same page.
  3. To move it to another page, drag it to the left or right edge of the screen and wait for the next page to slide in, then drop it.
  4. To move several apps at once, start dragging one app, then tap other apps with a second finger to add them to the stack.
  5. Tap Done in the top-right corner when you're finished.

The closest thing to the old iTunes Apps screen: WiggleGrid

WiggleGrid is an independent Windows app (not made by Apple) that does the job the iTunes Apps screen used to: every Home Screen page side by side on your PC, with drag and drop.

  1. Download WiggleGrid on your Windows 10 or 11 PC and create a free account.
  2. Connect your iPhone with a USB cable, unlock it and tap Trust if it asks. If Windows needs Apple's free Apple Devices app, WiggleGrid points you to it.
  3. Run the free compatibility check. It tells you whether your iPhone model and iOS version are supported before you pay anything.
  4. Drag apps between pages, sort folders, set up the Dock, or move apps you rarely use to the App Library.
  5. Click Review changes to see a plain list of everything that will change, then Apply to iPhone. WiggleGrid saves a snapshot of your current layout first and reads the iPhone back afterwards to confirm it matches.

Applying changes is a one-time $19.99 purchase. WiggleGrid never erases your iPhone, doesn't use iCloud and never asks for your Apple ID password. Don't like the result? Restore the snapshot in one click.

Widgets stay where they are, and hiding pages or making folders inside the Dock is still done on the iPhone. WiggleGrid runs on Windows 10 and 11; a Mac version is coming soon.

Try it on your PC, free

Download WiggleGrid and run the free compatibility check. Pay $19.99 once, only if your iPhone passes.
